Upcoming 2012 Historical Fiction Release: The King's Damsel by Kate Emerson

The King's Damsel by Kate Emerson
Publication Date: August 8th 2012
Format: Paperback 368pp

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"In the fifth novel in Kate Emerson’s highly acclaimed Secrets of the Tudor Court series, a young gentlewoman catches King Henry the Eighth’s roving eye.
In 1533 and again in 1534, Henry the Eighth reportedly kept a mistress while he was married to Anne Boleyn. Now, that mistress comes to vivid life in Kate Emerson’s The King’s Damsel.
A real-life letter from Spanish Ambassador Eustace Chapuys, written on September 27, 1534, reported that the king had “renewed and increased the love he formerly bore to another very handsome young lady of the Court” and that the queen had tried “to dismiss the damsel from her service.” Other letters reveal that the mystery woman was a “true friend” of the Princess (later Queen) Mary, Henry’s daughter by Catherine of Aragon. Though no one knows who “the king’s damsel” really was, here Kate Emerson presents her as young gentlewoman Thomasine Lodge, a lady-in-waiting to King Henry’s daughter, Princess Mary. Thomasine becomes the Princess’s confidante, especially as Henry’s marriage to Catherine dissolves and tensions run high. When the king procures a divorce in order to marry Anne Boleyn, who is suspicious and distrustful of Mary, Mary has Thomasine placed in Anne’s service to be her eyes and ears. And that’s when she gets the attention of the king...
Rich in historical detail and featuring a wealth of bonus material, The King’s Damsel is sure to keep readers coming back for more."

Review: The Sumerton Women by D.L. Bogdan

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"Orphaned at age eight, Lady Cecily Burkhart becomes the ward of Harold Pierce, Earl of Sumerton. Lord Hal and his wife, Lady Grace, welcome sweet-natured Cecily as one of their own. With Brey, their young son, Cecily develops an easy friendship. But their daughter, Mirabella, is consumed by her religious vocation - and by her devotion to Father Alec Cahill, the family priest and tutor. As Henry VIII's obsession with Anne Boleyn leads to violent religious upheaval, Mirabella is robbed of her calling and the future Cecily dreamed of is ripped away in turn. Cecily struggles to hold together the fractured household while she and Father Alec grapple with a dangerous mutual attraction. Plagued with jealousy, Mirabella unleashes a tumultuous chain of events that threatens to destroy everyone around her, even as the kingdom is torn apart..."

My Review:

Set during the religious upheaval of Henry VIII's reign, The Sumerton Women tells a tale or love, loss, betrayal and redemption. Told in third person point of view, the story closely follows the lives of Cecily Burkhart and Mirabella Pierce. Cecily Burkhart, ward of Harold Pierce, comes to love the Sumerton family as her own and considers herself most fortunate to have found happiness and security so soon after the death of her parents. But alas, happiness can only last so long during the reign of Henry VIII. While Cecily is naive to the distressing undercurrents within the Sumerton family, Mirabella is bitter as her desires for the future are swiftly destroyed by her family and King Henry VIII. Through the years all those who come to live at Sumerton Castle will be affected by the paths these two willful women chose in life. Trying to salvage a family wrought by destruction, can these two women put aside their own desires in order to create a peaceful future for their loves ones?

The Sumerton Women is a remarkable work of historical fiction that draws the reader in with each shocking chapter. This is the third novel by D.L. Bogdan and I must declare that it is my favorite so far. The fluid writing style combined with the subtle foreshadowing creates a compelling reading experience that will stay with the reader long after the the last page. Although the book is set during Henry VIII's ruthless reign, this is only a plot backdrop which instigates the majority of drama found at the fictitious Sumerton Castle. The characters are well defined, the historical detail is superb and the plot is deliciously intricate. I don't want to give anything away about the characters, so I will merely say that I was emotionally engaged throughout this novel and it ultimately led me to tears at one point, which is something that I rarely do while reading a novel. Considering all the brilliant elements of this novel, and of course the fact that I was brought to tears, I give this novel one of my highest recommendations for historical fiction novels of 2012.

Upcoming 2012 Historical Fiction Release! The Queen's Vow by C.W. Gortner

It's almost here! Yes, that's right, another novel from the exceptionally talented C.W. Gorter. After reading his first novel, The Last Queen (read my review here), I was captivated by the life of Isabella's daughter Juana, and now I am thrilled to learn about Isabella herself!

The Queen's Vow by C.W. Gortner
Publication Date: June 12th 2012
Format: Hardcover 400pp

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"No one believed I was destined for greatness.
So begins Isabella’s story, in this evocative, vividly imagined novel about one of history’s most famous and controversial queens—the warrior who united a fractured country, the champion of the faith whose reign gave rise to the Inquisition, and the visionary who sent Columbus to discover a New World. Acclaimed author C. W. Gortner envisages the turbulent early years of a woman whose mythic rise to power would go on to transform a monarchy, a nation, and the world.
Young Isabella is barely a teenager when she and her brother are taken from their mother’s home to live under the watchful eye of their half-brother, King Enrique, and his sultry, conniving queen. There, Isabella is thrust into danger when she becomes an unwitting pawn in a plot to dethrone Enrique. Suspected of treason and held captive, she treads a perilous path, torn between loyalties, until at age seventeen she suddenly finds herself heiress of Castile, the largest kingdom in Spain. Plunged into a deadly conflict to secure her crown, she is determined to wed the one man she loves yet who is forbidden to her—Fernando, prince of Aragon.
As they unite their two realms under “one crown, one country, one faith,” Isabella and Fernando face an impoverished Spain beset by enemies. With the future of her throne at stake, Isabella resists the zealous demands of the inquisitor Torquemada even as she is seduced by the dreams of an enigmatic navigator named Columbus. But when the Moors of the southern domain of Granada declare war, a violent, treacherous battle against an ancient adversary erupts, one that will test all of Isabella’s resolve, her courage, and her tenacious belief in her destiny.
From the glorious palaces of Segovia to the battlefields of Granada and the intrigue-laden gardens of Seville, The Queen’s Vow sweeps us into the tumultuous forging of a nation and the complex, fascinating heart of the woman who overcame all odds to become Isabella of Castile."
