Mailbox Monday

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the exciting books that came into their house last week via post. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists!

Mailbox Monday was created by Marcia at A Girl and her Books, and is currently being hosted by Mari from Mari Reads for the month of May.

I am super excited about my mailbox this week... I can't believe I haven't read this novel yet!

Purchased from Barnes and Noble:

by Michelle Moran
Publish Date: February 2011
Format: Hardcover 464pp

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"The world knows Madame Tussaud as a wax artist extraordinaire . . . but who was this woman who became one of the most famous sculptresses of all time? In these pages, her tumultuous and amazing story comes to life as only Michelle Moran can tell it. The year is 1788, and a revolution is about to begin.
Smart and ambitious, Marie Tussaud has learned the secrets of wax sculpting by working alongside her uncle in their celebrated wax museum, the Salon de Cire. From her popular model of the American ambassador, Thomas Jefferson, to her tableau of the royal family at dinner, Marie’s museum provides Parisians with the very latest news on fashion, gossip, and even politics. Her customers hail from every walk of life, yet her greatest dream is to attract the attention of Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI; their stamp of approval on her work could catapult her and her museum to the fame and riches she desires. After months of anticipation, Marie learns that the royal family is willing to come and see their likenesses. When they finally arrive, the king’s sister is so impressed that she requests Marie’s presence at Versailles as a royal tutor in wax sculpting. It is a request Marie knows she cannot refuse—even if it means time away from her beloved Salon and her increasingly dear friend, Henri Charles.
As Marie gets to know her pupil, Princesse Élisabeth, she also becomes acquainted with the king and queen, who introduce her to the glamorous life at court. From lavish parties with more delicacies than she’s ever seen to rooms filled with candles lit only once before being discarded, Marie steps into a world entirely different from her home on the Boulevard du Temple, where people are selling their teeth in order to put food on the table.
Meanwhile, many resent the vast separation between rich and poor. In salons and cafés across Paris, people like Camille Desmoulins, Jean-Paul Marat, and Maximilien Robespierre are lashing out against the monarchy. Soon, there’s whispered talk of revolution. . . . Will Marie be able to hold on to both the love of her life and her friendship with the royal family as France approaches civil war? And more important, will she be able to fulfill the demands of powerful revolutionaries who ask that she make the death masks of beheaded aristocrats, some of whom she knows?
Spanning five years, from the budding revolution to the Reign of Terror, Madame Tussaud brings us into the world of an incredible heroine whose talent for wax modeling saved her life and preserved the faces of a vanished kingdom."

Suddenly Sunday with Important Blog Updates!!!

Suddenly Sunday is a weekly event hosted by SveaThe Muse in the Fog Book Review. The purpose of Suddenly Sunday is to share all the exciting events that have occurred on your blog throughout the week.
--------------

Good morning my blogosphere companions! I am in shock that this is the last weekend of May, yet I am insanely excited because I will be leaving on vacation in a couple weeks, and you know what that means... yep, lots and lots of reading by the pool (hopefully the books will be safe this year, they aren't very good swimmers). In the midst of a busy week traveling to see family, I was able to accomplish a more than I thought possible here on the blog. So, before the rain outside lulls me to sleep, let me give you a recap of what has been going on here at Muse in the Fog:

Reviews Posted:

As I said in an earlier post, I have been contemplating changing the name of my blog for quite some time, and now I have finally done just that. I am happy to announce that this blog is now officially titled:
The Muse in the Fog Book Review
Now, a change like this must be thorough, so below are my updated items for this blog.

A new Facebook page for my blog.
I was unable to change the old page to coincide with the new title, so please take the time to quickly "like" the new FB page, thank you!

A new blog button, reflecting the new blog title!
Confessions and Ramblings of a Muse in the Fog

And the blog tweaking does not stop at the name change! It has recently come to my attention that this blog was unable to be read on tablet devices, such as the ipad, and also mobile devices did not particularly like downloading all the graphics. After learning of these pesky issues I couldn't stand knowing that some of my wonderful followers couldn't enjoy the blog they once did. Therefore, this weekend I embarked on a task of making this blog compatible with every browser and reading device; so if you have had issues viewing my blog in the past, this weekend was spent with you in mind :) I am now confident that everything is in order, but if any of you ever have trouble viewing my blog in the future just let me know, after all, I wan't The Muse in the Fog Book Review to be a place for your constant reading enjoyment!

That wraps up this edition of Suddenly Sunday from rainy California, I look forward to hearing what has been going on in your part of the blogging realm. Until next time, have a great week & happy reading!

Blog Update! Same blog, slightly different title...

Hello my lovely blog followers! In case you haven't noticed the header yet, I have shortened this blog's title. Now this was not a decision made at random, but one I have been contemplating for quite a while. When I first began this blog back in 2009 it was going to have a bit of everything, hence the "rambling" aspect of the title, but I quickly realized that my passion for reading and writing would be the driving force behind this blog, and it has been dedicated to my love of historical fiction ever since. So, in order to have the title reflect the content of this blog, I now give you:

The Muse in the Fog Book Review

If you would like to place my updated blog button on your own blog, please use the following code:
Confessions and Ramblings of a Muse in the Fog

And now for the new Facebook page to go along with the new name Unfortunately, FB will not let me change my current page's name so this is the only alternative... I am really hoping everyone will make the transition over to the new FB page for this blog :)

A tremendous thank you to everyone who follows this blog, it is your participation that make it such a pleasure to host!

Book Review: The Confessions of Catherine de Medici by C.W. Gortner

Publish Date: May 24th 2011
Format: Paperback 432pp

Synopsis: (From the Publisher):

"The truth is, not one of us is innocent. We all have sins to confess. So reveals Catherine de Medici, the last legitimate descendant of her family’s illustrious line. Expelled from her native Florence, Catherine is betrothed to Henri, son of François I of France. In an unfamiliar realm, Catherine strives to create a role for herself through her patronage of the famous clairvoyant Nostradamus and her own innate gift as a seer. But in her fortieth year, Catherine is widowed, left alone with six young children in a kingdom torn apart by the ambitions of a treacherous nobility. Relying on her tenacity, wit, and uncanny gift for compromise, Catherine seizes power, intent on securing the throne for her sons, unaware that if she is to save France, she may have to sacrifice her ideals, her reputation, and the secret of her embattled heart."

My Review:

To bring a historical figure to life within the pages of a book takes talent, but to bring to life a historical figure who has been viewed by history as a ruthless and un-compassionate person, and then to be able to portray them in an understandable, convincing and sympathetic light takes brilliance... and that is just what C.W. Gortner has delivered in his latest novel, The Confessions of Catherine de Medici.

Following Catherine’s life from the age of ten until her death, we are given an intimate look into what battles, both political and emotional, she had to face. As her life unfolds we have the privilege of witnessing an uncertain girl gain confidence, ingenuity and the power necessary to become a true defender of France. Although she reigned as Queen for a mere twelve years, she continued to influence the reign of all her children until her death, using whatever means necessary to keep the lineage of the Medici secure and the throne of France away from the treacherous Guise family.

Once again C.W. Gortner has captivated me with a fast paced and heart-wrenching piece of historical fiction; after the first few pages I knew that the book I held in my hands would hold me until the last page was turned. All of the characters are well developed and fully three dimensional; I found it fascinating that not one character ever overshadowed another, yet there was never a question that the main focus was always on Catherine. Having read little of Catherine de Medici before, I was intrigued to learn what this woman was really like, and I could not have requested a better introduction to her life. After reading this book Catherine has become more than a shadowy figure who meddled with the dark arts for personal gain, she has become a woman of feeling, passion and strength, one whose voice has much to tell… a voice that C.W. Gortner has illuminated in such a touching and compelling way. The Confessions of Catherine de Medici is definitely going on my list of favorite reads for 2011, I highly recommend it!

Book Review: Elizabeth and the Prince of Spain by Margaret Irwin

Elizabeth and the Prince of Spain by Margaret Irwin
Publish Date: April 2011
Format: Paperback pp

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"Philip, prince of Spain, the unwilling bridegroom of Queen Mary, has been warned about the queen’s half sister, Elizabeth. According to all reports, she is a heretic, a rebel, and a potential enemy, and had a “spirit full of enchantment.” Philip is immediately intrigued. Idolized by his aging wife, Philip holds the power to save the young princess, who has been accused of treachery by Mary and is under threat of death. The brilliant Elizabeth must walk the razor-thin line between Bloody Mary’s jealousy and Philip’s uneasy ardor."

My Review:

After reading the second book in this trilogy, Elizabeth Captive Princess (my review), and finding it to be quite good, I was eager to read this final installment, but unfortunately my expectations were a bit too high. Unlike Elizabeth Captive Princess, I found it hard to completely immerse myself in this novel; the characters were distant and there were times when it became confusing who was narrating the story (Elizabeth, Phillip or Mary). I was surprised that this book veered away from the rest of the trilogies focus on Elizabeth. While Elizabeth was indeed a main character, we did not hear much about her until a third of the way through the novel and even after that she was greatly overshadowed by Phillip.

Now despite these issues, I did appreciate the vantage point on Elizabeth's life, for it's not often one finds Phillip of Spain as a main character. Before reading this Phillip of Spain was merely a name in the history books, now he has become a more prominent figure in the relationship between these two sisters.

Overall this was a quick and easy read and one that, if nothing else, will pique your curiosity about who Phillip of Spain really was. If you are looking for a book about Elizabeth I's relationship with her sister Mary I would suggest reading the previous book in the series and forgoing this one, but, if you are looking for a novel that focuses on Philip of Spain and the political intrigue he brought to Mary's court, then by all means this book will suit you well.

Suddenly Sunday

Suddenly Sunday is a weekly event hosted by SveaConfessions and Ramblings of a Muse in the Fog. The purpose of Suddenly Sunday is to share all the exciting events that have occurred on your blog throughout the week.
--------------

Hello everyone! Another week has flown by at a stunning rate... I should probably be used to that by now, lol. Besides the time flying by, the weather has been quite random with it being sunny and hot followed by thunderstorms, but it has made for some great settings to read by.

This week I was delighted to find two books on sale that have been on my TBR list since their release!

by Arliss Ryan

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"An inventive and vibrant historical novel about the woman who dared to be the equal of the Bard of Avon.
Dramatizing a marriage born of passion and strained by ambition, Arliss Ryan's fascinating historical novel chronicles a love affair for the ages, and the story of a woman who dares to fulfill her own surprising destiny.
Anne Hathaway is weighing her prospects for marriage when a dalliance with young Will Shakespeare, the poetry-writing son of a rural glove- maker, leaves her pregnant and wed. When Will joins a traveling acting troupe and moves to London, Anne leaves their children in his parents' care and boldly follows him.
Taking up a new identity at Will's side, Anne supports his career as a struggling actor by sewing costumes and transcribing manuscripts in the rough-and-tumble world of London's theatres. As Will finds his true calling in writing, Anne's own literary skills begin to flower, leading to a secret collaboration that makes Will the foremost playwright in Elizabethan England."

by Jeane Westin

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"The story of Elizabeth I, as it's never been told before-through the eyes of two ladies-in-waiting closest to her...
In a court filled with repressed sexual longing, scandal, and intrigue, Lady Katherine Grey is Elizabeth's most faithful servant. When the young queen is smitten by the dashing Robert Dudley, Katherine must choose between duty and desire-as her secret passion for a handsome earl threatens to turn Elizabeth against her. Once the queen becomes a bitter and capricious monarch, another lady-in-waiting, Mistress Mary Rogers, offers the queen comfort. But even Mary cannot remain impervious to the court's sexual tension-and as Elizabeth gives her doomed heart to the mercurial Earl of Essex, Mary is drawn to the queen's rakish godson..."

Have any of you been watching the new series Camelot on Starz? I am really enjoying the series and while I was annoyed with the casting choice for Arthur, my opinion of him has managed to improve with every episode.

A Crimson Warning by Tasha Alexander
Pub. Date: October 25th 2011
Format: Hardcover 320pp

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"Secrets prove deadly in this new novel featuring Lady Emily Hargreaves. Some very prominent people in London are waking up to find their doorsteps smeared with red paint, the precursor to the revelation of a dark secret – and worse – by someone who enjoys destroying lives.

The delights, that is, as defined by her own eccentricities—reading The Aeneid, waltzing with her dashing husband, and joining the Women’s Liberal Federation in the early stages of its campaign to win votes for women. This mark, impossible to hide, presages the revelation of scandalous secrets, driving the hapless victims into disgrace, despair and even death. Friday Finds at the Bookstore: Love and Louis XIV by Antonia Fraser

Friday Finds at the Bookstore is a weekly event hosted by Svea @Confessions and Ramblings of a Muse in the Fog. Every Friday simply post your latest bookish discovery that was found while browsing the bookstore or, in some cases, the library. It needn't be a book you purchased, but merely a newly found novel that caught your attention.
________

Synopsis (From the Publisher):
"The superb historian and biographer Antonia Fraser, author of Marie Antoinette, casts new light on the splendor and the scandals of the reign of Louis XIV in this dramatic, illuminating look at the women in his life.
The self-proclaimed Sun King, Louis XIV ruled over the most glorious and extravagant court in seventeenth-century Europe. Now, Antonia Fraser goes behind the well-known tales of Louis’s accomplishments and follies, exploring in riveting detail his intimate relationships with women.
The king’s mother, Anne of Austria, had been in a childless marriage for twenty-two years before she gave birth to Louis XIV. A devout Catholic, she instilled in her son a strong sense of piety and fought successfully for his right to absolute power. In 1660, Louis married his first cousin, Marie-Thérèse, in a political arrangement. While unfailingly kind to the official Queen of Versailles, Louis sought others to satisfy his romantic and sexual desires. After a flirtation with his sister-in-law, his first important mistress was Louise de La Vallière, who bore him several children before being replaced by the tempestuous and brilliant Athénaïs, marquise de Montespan. Later, when Athénaïs’s reputation was tarnished, the King continued to support her publicly as Athénaïs left court for a life of repentance. Meanwhile her children’s governess, the intelligent and seemingly puritanical Françoise de Maintenon, had already won the King’s affections; in a relationship in complete contrast to his physical obsession with Athénaïs, Louis XIV lived happily with Madame de Maintenon for the rest of his life, very probably marrying her in secret. When his grandson’s child bride, the enchanting Adelaide of Savoy, came to Versaille she lightened the King’s last years – until tragedy struck.
With consummate skill, Antonia Fraser weaves insights into the nature of women’s religious lives – as well as such practical matters as contraception – into her magnificent, sweeping portrait of the king, his court, and his ladies."
